Book Arts 3.0: Creative Collaboration for All Subject Areas

This hands-on session will have all new book techniques that can be used for writing, journaling, note-taking, etc. in ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, STEAM, and most subjects. The day will include discussion on the many ways books can be used across all subject areas, as well as painting and book engineering techniques. The hands-on portion of the day will focus on learning book art techniques and creating a variety of books. Participants will create complete sample books to bring back to their classrooms. All necessary materials will be provided, however, participants should feel free to bring any materials they choose to enhance their designs.

Elementary STEM Teachers Roundtable

Grades Pre-K - 4 STEM teachers will gather to dissect standards, share and develop hands-on STEM activities that meet curriculum goals and promote critical thinking skills among students, strategize ways to stretch budgets, and more! This is an excellent opportunity for educators from different schools to collaborate and exchange innovative ideas in a professional learning environment.

It's (Not Always) Elementary: Teaching Tough Topics with Younger Students

This workshop will examine current mandates and learning standards that address gender, identity, and sexuality as they pertain to pre-K and elementary school students and their families. Human growth and development doesn't just begin at puberty, and educators often feel uncertain about addressing these sensitive topics with young children. Consent and relationships can be taught outside the context of sexuality, and this workshop will offer a framework for thinking about these topics as life skills for all learners. The day will include discussions on how to handle concerns and challenges from families or the community at large.

Math the "Write" Way

Math and language arts are usually seen as two separate entities by teachers and students alike; however, the two subjects are truly connected. This workshop will provide participants with strategies to combine reading, writing, and math. Example strategies include using a perfect paragraph format to explain a mathematical answer, using story writing to help interpret and solve word problems, breaking down multi-step directions, and comprehending word problems. Participants will leave this workshop with specific strategies and project ideas to incorporate into their own classrooms.

Media Arts Roundtable

Media Arts is described as the study of human communication through film, photography, video, audio, computer/digital arts, and interactive media. Participants will learn more about the new New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Media Arts and how to infuse them into the classroom. They will also explore podcasting, video creation, and other models of Media Arts implementation and will be encouraged to share their own ideas and examples with the group.

Sculpture & Printing Workshop: A 3D & 2D STEAM Experience

Explore the world of printing and sculpture. Participants will create a variety of 3-D mini-projects using various sculpture techniques. Some of those projects will then be used in the printing portion of the class. The sculpture techniques will utilize a variety of materials including recycled and found objects. This class is appropriate for all grade levels and subject areas with an emphasis on using art and STEAM techniques to enhance student learning.

Teaching Multilingual Learners Using the WIDA Standards Framework

This workshop will model the integration of content and English language development standards for content-area teachers using the 2020 WIDA Standards Framework. Participants will learn how to align language and content standards with a focus on developing language expectations, functions, and features, for multilingual learners.
